South West MN | If you took ethanol, subsidized crop insurance and all government payments out of the equation would it help young farmers?
Most likely crop prices would fall, along with land and inputs. Deere would have trouble selling a $500,000 combine with $2 corn.
More land would pencil going back into grass. There aren’t a lot of old farmers going to run out and buy cows or sheep. This would work out well for a young guy with a strong back who was willing to fence and do chores.
Livestock guy has a crop disaster he makes silage. 5000 acre guy combines 50 bushel corn without livestock and crop insurance he is just out.
It’s popular on this sight to bitch about the BTO and be pro ethanol and crop insurance but this along with EZ weed control are the reasons why guys can run 5000 acres.
My 2 cents. | |
