southern MN | That was an old Funk number was common around here for a couple years but fellas got tired of it. Had to hand husk it, it wouldn’t fit through the pickers of the day, and really just got to be a logistics nightmare all the way around.
Had to use a potato planter to plant it, and seed was sold by the bushel back then not seed count, so it was darned expensive.
The braggarts in the neighborhood liked it as you can imagine, but in reality it never did pencil out like you would think. Even just feeding it, well you can see from the pic, hammermills back then weren’t up to the task it was real work to make feed of it.
It did raise some really large pork, but even that came with problems, no one knew how to process a 3700# hog, ended up hauling them around one at a time on carts if I recall. Then, where do you find a frying pan to fry a porkchop that size? So even the women folk weren’t very happy with it.
There was so much promise on paper, but it all just ended up being the emu scheme of the year. Faded away as fast as it came.
