EC SoDak | Typically when I hedge my corn crop, I’m starting out with Dec contract and normally roll to the next July in the Aug-Oct range. When there are still a lot of unknowns for the crop early in the season, the spread tends to be In the mid teens, but normally widens out into the mid 20s to lower 30s. I’ll start rolling when I get into that range. Right now I believe the spread is around 19 cents. However, some years it can struggle to even hit mid 20s, that’s where USDA and/or field reports help you understand likely potential.
Beans I start with the Nov contract, but I tend to float more on which contract I roll to.
I’m more of a seasonals/spread your risk hedger as that tends to have a better batting average than a lot of marketing plans.
