I put enough for first year before seeding and then apply twice a year on top after that. When you apply potash on top to alfalfa you can see results in the next cutting. Alfalfa responds well to yearly sulfur and boron in my area and trying to apply that years in advance doesn't work very well. Fertilizer doesn't have to move into the soil very far for alfalfa to utilize it.
