From 2015 through 2017 I showed a 4.5 bu advantage to soybeans planted into rye in the flowering stage. In 2018 I showed a 2 bu loss of soybeans planted into rye that was terminated at about 6 to 8" tall. 2015 and 2016 we had wet springs with summer dry periods. 2017 was warm early spring followed by extremely dry summer conditions. 2018 we were in a D3 to D4 drought which is why I chose to terminate rye sooner. Last year in the drought the corn planted where cover crops had been the year prior showed a 60 bu advantage. The data is only being gathered with a yield monitor but the comparison regions are over 15ac each.

I'm getting excellent weed control in the rye and have not been using any pre-residual chemical to help hold weeds back so the cost savings there are paying for the rye seed.
