Subject: RE: Dowdy - corn yield drag due to Herbicide??

South Central MN
Heard of roundup at the wrong time hurting corn, more for late applications, suspected others could as well but weeds hurt too...

This year with a very wet June had Tripleflexx on pre-emerge on all but one late planted field, and because we couldn't get through with anything else before the corn got too tall all the corn ended up having roundup sprayed with drop nozzles when it was waist/chest high, not the best weed control but didn't have any other option. Had a field of Enlist corn but never got to use the Enlist on it.

The last field planted had roundup and regular 2-4-D sprayed on it right as it was coming out of the ground, then a late app of roundup with drops. Somehow ended up being the best yielding field, probably for a number of factors. Herbicide may have been part of it. Weed control wasn't the best however.

I don't know what herbicides are the worst for affecting corn at what stages but anything causing a lot of stress to the plant will affect yield. Quite a few corn herbicides that can't be used for sweet corn, as it is a pretty wimpy plant.
Soybeans are a whole different critter, sometimes they yield quite a bit better when beaten up early. They don't "set" yield early like corn does and are flexible to conditions.

Edit: Had a few bags of Smartstax Enlist corn around the edge of the field, should make for awesome volunteer corn, LL, RR, and resistant to group 1 "fops" family. (Fusilade) The "dim" (Select and the likes) will kill it though.
