Help me understand why at the moment in order to be able to get the Russian Glonass satelites or make use of my own RTK base station I would have to pay for some expensive unlocks.
What justifies those "unlock ", charges ?
The general justification for unlocks is that hardware is cheap and software development is expensive. The same hardware can be used for many differentiated feature sets that have differing levels of value in the market; those features are determined by software. Unlocks are a way to recover software development costs (and make a corresponding profit) for higher-value (or more developmentally-complex) features, without requiring all users (including those who don't want or need those features) to pay the price for the highest-value featureset. |
