Subject: RE: Small farm ROI

West TN
My best ROI items are:

Automatic cutoffs on sprayer and planter. I save around 10% inputs because of my equipment size and odd field shapes.

Clearing out tree lines and unneeded terraces to increase field size and increase the amount of sunlight and water available to my crops. Tree lines (usually grown up fence lines) were robbing lots of yield around the field borders. Also was loosing a lot of yield in smaller fields due to a lot of turning around and running over crop while spraying. Most of my fields had a bunch of terraces made in the 70’s and 80’s with a dozer and were way too steep to farm across and created a lot of smaller fields within a large field. They were need when we did conventional tillage but most are no longer needed with no till and cover crops.

I believe integrating cover crops will be a great ROI long term but the ROI will be years down the road.
