Farming 50,000 acres at one point and surviving being way over extended doesn't sound like poor decisions to me. I think the article was written to show all his bad decisions. I suspect he is a pretty savvy financial decision maker. He was able to figure out how to pull back quickly enough to survive some pretty tough times.

I would guess his family were clearly high risk takers and able to function under the high pressure of those risks. Sometimes it didn't work out..sometimes it did.
