They are usually put in solitary for their own protection.
A guy from here that killed his wife & threw her body in the landfill, & probably killed his 7-year-old daughter too, but they have never found her body, was "accidentally" put into general population when he first went to prison. 24 hours later, beaten within an inch of his life, he was transferred to solitary.
