Mid Mo | Jim, while I understand what you are saying about shared risks, there are a few differences between health insurance and your other examples.
People choose to have a car or not. How many people live in NYC with no vehicle and therefore no vehicle insurance. Even if you have a vehicle with state minimum levels of liability that won’t cover damages on a new vehicle today, that is a choice (poor one) that a person is allowed to make.
People can choose to live in a 500K house with a mortgage or a 5K paid for shack with no insurance.
People choose different risk levels they are comfortable with and should be allowed to make the same choice with health care. | |
