Subject: RE: Chopping corn head raising bean yields (how)

West of Mpls MN about 50 miles on Hwy 12
My thoughts have always been that whatever you plant the soybean seed with is doing a better job of planting the soybean seed in sized residue.

You get a more consistent planting depth, which leads to much more even emergence. No praying for rain the day after you plant because half the soybean seed is laying dry and you wind up with two or three crops of soybeans in the same field with the one planting attempt.

Row cleaners handle sized residue much better than unsized residue which gives leads to way less hairpinnning, which leads to less planting skips.

The further North you go, the more consistent the yield increase will be from year to year IMO. Many years the cornstalks wake up in the spring tougher than when we put them to bed in the fall around here. Planter mounted coulters and seed openers will not cut the stalks no matter how much down pressure you have.
