Sugar, weather it’s natural from live roots or added physically, feeds the biology. Scientifically proven fact. Now how to measure that to show an ROI is not so easy. I use it on every single pass in the field. Haney Test May be a good option for showing biological improvement. Any tillage at all used then I wouldn’t waste the sugar.

 IMHO there is where you would most likely get a response to sugar.
