I think you are going about it right. Applying the K in the fall works better here I think. If you are using potash you are throwing out a small rock, so the more time it has to break down the better. As for leaching away, K doesnt move a whole lot so no I dont think you are losing much at all. The VR spreading is a good idea to maintain good areas and try to fix the bad. How much are you throwing on the bad areas? 60 bushel beans will take over 70 lbs of potassium off with the grain. So 120 lbs of potash is just maintaining your current levels and not building at all.
