Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa | We bought the farm across the road 3 years ago, and took down what remained of the old building site. None of the original buildings had been good quality construction at all, so they weren't any loss at all, and no salvageable structural components. After the dozer and excavator had been back and forth across the site about a dozen times each, my husband picked up a really old, slope-shouldered pottery jug, still in perfect condition. No chips or cracks at all. We were both pretty surprised. Back in the fence row off the corner of the crib, we found a old (1930s-'40s?) stalk cutter, again just about perfect condition. It's patiently awaiting its opportunity to become yard art at our place this spring. One of us is much more excited about that installation than the other. ;~) |
