Beresford, SD | Memories of working that hard to harvest a crop gives me a headache. Back in the day we picked all the corn we didn't chop with a 300 JD with a 2 row 38" head. My job was pulling gravity wagons with the 1972 C10......mud and snows, 250 6 banger/4 speed.....(of course single glass pack exhaust). Had to dump a loader bucket of gravel in the bed for weight. (I could barely reach the pedals then). My then 80 year old great uncle ran the picker, pulled by a 1486 (I despise that POS). Dad swapped wagons with me and unloaded at the pile. Kept adding more rings until the elevator wouldn't go up any more. Neighbor would come over with his tubgrinder to make feed..... grind hay, swap screens grind ear corn. Took 2 loader tractors to keep up grinding. PIK certificate days! No desire to repeat that dirty process.
