Driftless SW Wisconsin

Seems awfully inefficient to mechanically harvest feed then pack that feed to cows then haul the poop back out to the field where the feed came from. It’ll be hard for the confinement guys to compete on price with the guys who let the cow do all that work for them. I would think a 25% drop in feeder prices would shut down a lot of the confinement cow guys. Lots and lots of cow county ain’t great for hunting ain’t scenic and ain’t productive enough to grain farm.
But what if you had go out and buy a piece of land to run the cows on that cash flow is worse than putting up a building, just saying

Buying a piece of ground to grow corn or beans doesn't cash flow very well either.  Putting up a building for cows may not take much land but still takes a lot of dollars and still has to be paid for year around by one calf to sell per cow per year. Not to mention every bit of the 2.5% of her weight she eats each day has to be purchased and brought in from somewhere.

Cows can be grazed on hillsides and all sorts of non-farmable and non-buildable ground.
