Cattle in the Southern and High Plains (where most of the cattle are fed) have no need for a roof - the small number of "bad days" they get won't justify it. As you move to the north and east, it gets colder and wetter. In the upper midwest it's very easy to justify a roof over your cattle. A large part of this is water quality rules that require so much expense in manure settling or storage that the roof can actually save money on a new facility. In addition to that, closeouts have shown us that the cattle will more than pay for the shed in better feed conversions and gains. Because of proximity to feed, cattle will always be fed in these areas and as time goes on more and more will end up under a roof. |
