Subject: The ways of transition out side of ag

SCIA
We had a family friend/employee pass from a massive heart attack, age 33. SIL is Ops manager of that division and this man was one of his best friends, also. So, several of SIL's family came for the funeral.

One of his nephews was visiting with my wife, last night. He wants to take over/buyout his dad. This is the arrangement, ( he has been working in the business for 6 to 7 years already). Five years of management training, before any thought of purchase/transition would be considered, then 5 to 10 years of joint operation, IE father and son in joint control, with buyout plan in effect during this time. When dad is satisfied that son is able to run this business, then he will slowly divest himself of leadership responsibility. So, it will be up to a twenty year process, with son being, if it takes 20 years, real close to 50. So, I ask why should it be any different in ag?

Also, several ag transition experts say that a "CEO's" replacement should be in training at least ten years. So, if some one goes to college, works off the farm 3 to 5 years, comes back to the farm and works 3 to 7 years, to see if this is really a "fit" for them, then spends 10 years in "CEO", why should they expect to be in the full "CEO" position any sooner?
