5 years work experience off the farm? What? Why? I don’t understand this theory at all and thankful this wasn’t a pre requisite in my family farming operation. Give a kid that opportunity and they may just never comeback and if they don’t sell your farm after you die then their kids surely will. If you got kids who want to farm and are blessed with an operation that can afford to have them farm then by all means get them boys farmin!

Sometimes a outside job for a couple years will make one appreciate the farm even more, and help make better decisions. A job will teach good work ethic and responsibilitys pretty quick.

Agree. Sometimes those who have never worked off the farm dont realize how good they have it. Especially those who look down on pary time farmers. Many of them put in long hours all year long, not just planting and harvest time. You will seldom seethem sitting around the local gathering spots talking about how bad things are and how hard they are working.
