The motor will take 20 amps of 120 volt power. Number 12 wire should handle that fine. All kinds of stuff can go wrong inside the motor. My paint sprayer, the cord would get hot. Still work. It was sending power back in the ground wire. Bare spot on wire inside of motor. Finally, wire burned off and didn't work anymore. That thing could have killed us.
