You are 100% correct. The Deere 12.5 and 13.5 are a low pressure common rail, and the gear pump on the rear of the head pumps based on engine RPM. No electronics involved there. The injector duration and timing is adjusted electronically. Increase timing for more efficiency and worse nox emissions, increase duration for more fuel.
Good luck in whatever way you go. I work on a lot of the high hp deere engines. Fuel away, but make sure the cooling system runs in the 190 or so range, or the cups will start leaking every 1500 hrs.
