The Internet

nick121 - 1/11/2019 14:17 Yeah electricity is expensive here in Ontario. Not sure why everyone thinks electricity is so clean cause it still has to be generated and wind and solar just isn't enough. Not to mention all the wind turbines they put up here took huge amounts of concrete and steel to build them, all that energy to build them to produce small amounts of power. And on the electric cars where in the world do people think the batteries come from? The batteries are horrible for the environment when being mined and also at the end of the lifespan. I'd much rather see some sort of bio diesel from algae or some other similar thing to produce diesel fuel. Or even hydrogen cars would be better than electric.

Someone on a UK based car forum is an engineer for an OEM auto builder.

He did some basic maths based on the power mix supplying the UK nation grid, this included transmission losses, that kind of stuff.

His maths showed that the CO2 per mile from an electric car driven in the UK today would have a similar carbon footprint as a brand new diesel car doing 200 miles to the imperial gallon.

Your car engine only meets the emissions regs in a very narrow band of temperatures, 23 degrees C IIRC. anything out of that and it's running dirty. Then, as the engine ages an or gets neglected by its owner the emissions suffer further. An electric motor has no such issues and is always as effecient. Add to the CCGT power plants are very effecient and not as susepctable to ambient temperature and run at the same load all of the time. Then as the power mix being pumped into the grid becomes cleaner, your electric car gets cleaner by default. Also, your electric car is always clean at the point of use, which is very important if you live in a densely poplated urban area as most people do.
