Biggest farmer in my county is doing something similar now. Just added the grain elevator business 2 years ago. Sells fertilizer, seed and chemicals. They've owned a sunflower crushing plant for at least 15 years. Also has 5 branches of their fairly new bank open. Got their beginning about 6 miles straight south of me. Still knee deep in farming though with a lot of that being similar to what you're explaining. They still directly farm most of the land but are transitioning. I serve on the school board with the fellow holding the reins.
