Nebraska, The land of corn and cattle
If its notill Id custom farm all day long for $100/acre, Im sure theres a lot of guys not clearing that much at the prices weve been at. We do a little custom farming, its dryland so the yields can be anywhere on the board, we plant it and then wouldn't have to look at it until harvest if we didn't want to , $20 to plant and $40 to harvest then trucking on top of it. We have 0 risk involved.
In the end it doesn't matter if it yields 1 bu or 200 it all pays the same, of course we do the best job we possibly can and treat them like our own acre, I know weve combined some beans that barely covered our fees, even when they were $10/bu
The guys that are worried about big money owning all the acres and leasing it back, whats the difference than it is today? Guys are willing to bid up rents until all the extra is gone, whats different if guys will custom farm for cheaper than the other guy until theres nothing left? Some days I don't think custom farming would be all a bad thing, doing the same thing Im doing now, but a whole lot less risk involved. Not much different than a 9-5 in town and you still get to do what you love.
