Subject: RE: Secondary sump pumps - water vs. electrical powered

West Central Wisconsin
Our daughter asked us to look over the house she was considering buying and my main concern was having a backup 12 volt pump. The seller replaced the main 110 volt pump and installed a 12 volt backup with a battery maintainer. Although a tight fit, the install appeared straight forward. It is piece of mind if for no other reason especially since her pump cycles about every 5 minutes. Yes, 5 minutes, year 'round. Make sure the discharge is rigid, (pvc), and not a hose. I used a hose for years until the torquing of the pump starting turned the pump to the point it didn't allow the tethered float to raise when it got full. :( I would also recommend a vertical float

If your pump doesn't cycle very often another option might be utilizing a security camera with an app to your phone. Obviously you would need to have family or friends nearby that could be called in case of a failure. Good luck!
