Subject: RE: Angus calves from our Dairy

Driftless SW Wisconsin

A beef breed cow/calf operation can not sell day old beef breed calves for $230 and survive.

A beef cow/calf operation has to support a cow for a year on that calf sale and hope for some profit to live on.

The beef breed cow/calf operation will be hurt as more and more dairies sell beef-looking 1/2 Holstein bull calves for by-product prices and downstream they get sold at or near beef breed prices. Of course the backgrounder and feeder don't see any problem here at all. The ultimate "cheap calves".

Note the emphasis on hide color in the replies.

The commodity beef of the future.
