Mine was pretty darn far from new when I got it and it was hard to operate. I took a syringe and shot used motor oil into every sliding/telescoping piece and you can run it with one finger after working it back and forth 10-20 times. I wouldn't use grease, that would probably work against you. Since yours is new, it might just be that new paint that's keeping it from working smooth? They are a very good manual headgate, shouldn't be a problem unless you have some REALLY tall cows. The biggest cows I've ever had were 1600lbs and they were no problem at all, for what that's worth.
