It wasnt theory, they did it. I didn't say I'd like to do it, but to answer the OPs question, yes its possible. But I'm a pretty firm believer that you had better carry over 6 months worth of forage if your going to be in the cow business.
It would take very good management, but if you count the calories to match requirements and keep the hay mixed in there won't be any founder. This would also be a good case for whole corn.
