We are feeding ryegrass hay from spring of 2018 right now. It heated to 190ish. Took sample after it heated, about 3 to 4 months after it was baled and it came back 19.5% protein.
Its starting to change smell from a tabacco smell to pretth rank stay upwind if you can. But cows prefer it and lick the ground clean.
2nd ryegrass cutting hay is real sweet smelling. It was still baled. Bit too wet and heated just a touch. It came out 17% protein. Cows like it but not like that nasty stuff.

The first cutting bales are like half the original size now. Figure 650lbs of feed. So maybe the heating doesnt really take too much away from it. You loose half thr weight but whats left is hgher consentration? I dunno...

Have been feeding that nasty stuff for a month now and still have probably 150 bales of it left. Started out 1 nasty 3 regular bales per herd. But since it started smelling different we decided better feed it ouf before if gets unedible to a cow. So now we are feeding 3 nasty and 2 good bales. Pastures are getting low on grass too.

But that ryegrass sure paid for itself and then some.
