That's one thing I try to do when my stepson or grandson are helping is to get them to do it so they learn something.  I told my wife when  I first had a grandson that my goal was to teach him how to fix things since so many young people can't.  Actually, my main goal is to teach him to use his brain to figure out how to do anything that he wants to do whether it's fixing something or building something or anything else, really.
