Subject: RE: Weaned calves on stalks

Western Nebraska
You two are not on the same page. The neighbor with 1000 pounders is supplemental feeding on stalks. Too many variables across this countryside to make a blanket determination on the internet. Here in western Nebraska we don't get the moisture you guys further east get, so stalk quality keeps longer but does deteriorate. Stalks freshly combined are waaaayy better than the same exact field in March.
I gotta neighbor who puts thin green 5-600lb calves on stalks, supplements some protein and gets 1-1.5 lb gain, keeps em healthy and hungry-then come spring grass turn out-they make money on compensatory gains.
His Protein supplement one year was dried distillers out of 5 gallon buckets. Them calves were puppy dog gentle. You could pet them at feeding time. My hispanic helpers called them pirahna. We'd have to go through an electric fence gate to work the fields and they'd just run over ya. None of them home raised, 100% barn bought. It's a big world out there. Many different ways to turn a dollar.
