Subject: RE: Weaned calves on stalks

Valley, NE
i usually run my replacement heifers on corn stalks with their mommas after being weaned 90 plus days. this gets them used to be cows and has them slim down coming off the silage TMR with the weigh up calves. But all mine are home raised and gentle or broke so you're more apt to have issues if you walk out with a white bucket in your hand than you are with them pushing on fence.

Bought calves with unknown backgrounds or calves that aren't used to the area sounds risky to me. one thing I also do is when I run my replacements in the spring, all the way to calving, I keep a gentle older cow or two with them to show them ropes, (finding a docile geriatric cow that could some TLC is not hard in my herd) . Those calves/replacements will follow her no matter where she goes all spring summer and fall.

just my .02
