Subject: RE: Removing Mature Horns

SW Wisconsin
I have removed some fairly large horns with a saw and iron. If you can restrain them well enough just heat the iron, saw the horn off where it meets the skull, and burn it with the iron until it stops bleeding and, to quote the guy who taught me, “it looks like a well-done steak.” It’s a little messy, but the only time I’ve had trouble is when I did it in the summer and they got maggots in their heads. The heifers were ok, but there were a couple in the group that were short-bred and lost their calves. I have dehorned bred heifers in winter with no problems, but you may have different results in that regard; it is risky.
