northwest illinois | Having been around dairy, beef and hogs might entire life had been wanting to try sheep to graze some small grass areas. I purchased a handful of polypay ewes ( wool ) from a reputable breeder and was disappointed in them being very skittish and picky eaters. I sold the polypays and purchased 3 bred St. Croix ewes ( hair ) and have been thrilled with them. They are extremely prolific, efficient, and the finest mothers I have seen in a production animal. Hair sheep are known for their parasite resistance and better tasting meat vs. the wool breeds. Going forward, I plan to cross the St. Croix with Dorper to achieve an ideal grass/forage animal. | |
