Ron, we have three Petes with manual 13's, and one with an auto-shift. You are correct in saying that the engine revs more with the auto than it probably would if it were a manual. But that can be adjusted by re-programming the shift specs. Or you could simply push the manual mode button and push another button to shift up or down at will.

The other issue I have with our auto truck is the fan drive on the Cummins in it drives me crazy with the noise and kicking up huge dust clouds. We don't seem to have that problem with the other trucks that have Cats in them. The fan on the Cummins is likely the source of most of the engine rev noise you have heard on other trucks.
