SW Ontario		+1 we had the same problem as you were having with buildup. Installed a centrifugal fan on leg to pressurize the system and haven’t had a problem since. Didn’t believe it until we did it. Can take a pic tomorrow.

Edit: to be clear we are pressurizing the leg.
