Depends how good your eyes are. If I had to use open sights any deer farther away than about 25 yards would be safe.

My M/L has a 3x9 scope on it, because that's the scope I had around. A 2x7 or a fixed 2.5 or 4 would also work. Just because the scope goes to 7 or 9 doesn't mean you have to crank it up.

A good muzzle loader with good bullets should be able to reliably kill deer out to 200 yards. That gets to be a pretty small target with open sights.

Mine is a Thompson Center Encore. Be sure that whatever you get is inline and uses 209 shotgun primers for ignition.
