Subject: Steel seal ring - will it seal?

Litchfield MN.

Managed to damage the sidewall of a metal seal ring groove on the center support of an Allison automatic transmission that I'm fixing (see pic). My question is, do I need to replace the assembly or will the new seal ring still seal properly even though the chunk of it's sidewall  is missing(it's about 1/4" long piece that's missing).  Not familiar with the science behind what these rings need to do their job. Does the groove just hold them in place of does it assist in the sealing process?

Thanks
