I would get a cellular hotspot to leave in the house full time, and connect a wifi thermostat to it.  If you're going to see the temp, may as well be able to do something about it as well.  Where we vacation has a Nest thermostat and I like it fine, but I opted for a Honeywell wifi thermostat for home.  Our Simplisafe alarm system also gives me the temp, but I can actually make changes if need be with the Honeywell.   Ours is hooked up to a novatel 7730 MiFi hotspot.
