i found you need a decent amount early. v3-5. reason being, sulfur deficiency slows growth. any time I have had corn show the visible signs of S deficiency, even fertigated immediately after I lost growth/plant size and on sand you just cant make that up.

that said, the nutrient uptake curves of corn show a sizable usage post pollination, so slightly later than N. Sulfur being R1-3, versus V12-R1 for rapid N uptake.
