Subject: RE: Banding dry with planter

Strathcona, mn
I have been dropping fert in front of closing wheels. We are full tillage. I made drop tubes that are cut at an angle and bent a little. They go down the hole where the insecticide boxes would drop. It deflects fert about 2” off row. Put down around 185-200# of dap and potash this way. I pull a 340bushel concord cart behind a 32x30” 3800 Kinze planter. Maintenance has been minimal. Took a little to get hoses routed without plugging. Nice to get it done in one pass. Come back and topdress urea at 1-2’ tall. 130-160bpa yield goal. Very rarely are we ever dry after planting. We normally get a rainy pattern end of May or early June. Believe me when I say it is noticeable when the fert cart is shut off. I would favor deep banding but IMO it isn’t worth the extra trip here.
