Yes, you need it. And you should buy it from me! (just kidding).

There is some merit to the hyd downforce systems.

In my opinion they are well suited to an operator that is planting in tough conditions, and has already addressed all the low hanging fruit on the perfect stand of corn.
Such as:
A monitor that monitors singulation.
New or rebuilt meters, tight bushings in the parallel arms, tight gauge wheel clearance to the opener. New openers. No till coulters/row cleaners adjusted and set to the proper depth, New seed tubes that aren't rubbing the openers.
If you are adjusting your manual or air downforce regularly now, and you still can't get the stand you want.

Then I think a hydraulic system would be a benefit to you.

Maybe if some of the things on that list above need to be done first, that would be money better spent.
