Sioux County, NWIA | I haven’t dug into the whole CSA financial history but I did get the impression that the loss of effectiveness of their currency was somewhat of a chicken and egg question. I recall seeing the inflation graph and it was more linear than one would think. You are correct in that one of their problems was taxation. Richmond found itself in a peculiar dilemma. It was governing a country that was fighting a war on the premise of States Rights, and it as the central government needed to impose taxes in order to keep the war effort afloat. They were reluctant to tax heavily and no doubt this contributed to the financial demise of the CSA. It struck me when I looked at the financial side of the Civil War that the CSA was doomed before one shot was fired simply because of finances. | |
