Great discussion. I would argue oil is one of hundreds of energy sources. The oil companies have a little better handle on marketing dynamics. And yes there are renewable ( growable) energy sources.


I agree, one of the better discussions on here in a while.

Oil is one of hundreds of energy sources, but it is (right now) the cheapest and most efficient for most situations. So they control the energy market as a whole much like corn controls the Calorie market. To go back to my example of corn producers who are also feeding/distilling corn, if we put production caps on corn some of the corn production for feed would become sorghum or another source. So alternatives exist but there is a reason that corn or oil is dominant, and while that can and will change over time it is a process and not an event. There will always be a use for oil just like there will always be a use for corn (and by "always" I think realistically we are looking at a 100 year time period at least).
