| You must have never had a major drought then. I collected over $200,000 in 2012. I had 2 kids in college at the time and I may not have been able to survive that without insurance. I know it sure made me sleep better at night that summer. A year like that has the potential to end many people’s farming career without the safety net. Even if they did survive it would likely take many years to crawl out of the hole. 2012 was an fluke. Most droughts are regional and don’t cover a large enough area to raises prices to offset the low yields. I have been there a couple times before crop insurance and it hurts when your corner of the world is the only one not getting rain and the prices still suck. I have no desire to ever farm without the peace of mind that comes from the insurance. | |
