| My day job is contract manufacturing. Since the tariffs on metals went in aluminum is up about $.60 a pound, stainless has doubled or even tripled for some alloys, and even mild steel has almost doubled from what it was last year. Since I buy between 3,000 and 5,000 pounds a month this is real money, some of which I can pass on to customers and some I have to eat. One of my customers mentioned today that he just wrote a $12,000 check for the import tariff on gear head motors that he uses in the products that he makes (small 6 person company) and he is not sure that they are going to survive this next increase. Before anyone chimes in saying that he should use American motors - these are not made here. Either pretty good Chinese motors or better German motors that cost about 6X as much. | |
