After carefully studying these things for years I had always figured out that one should make a wire and only connect GND, TX, RX and PWR(+12v) from 500 to a bt-dongle so that one does not fry out anything expensive.
But after reading Your post I gave it a try:
Hooked my LM048 dongle directly behind a 500 to the d9-sub connector: It gets powered right away and starts blinking OK. And gets a RTK fix in no time at all after starting Lance's NTRIP app on my phone.
And the ez-500 USB port is still free to give power to my android device!
So if one does not need "Radar speed output" or "External coverage logging" from the 9 pin D-sub this sure is the way to KISS (Keep it small and simple).
