Some apps really suck down your battery so it you have apps sitting on your Pad that are not used very often just delete them. I helped my phone battery by getting rid of a bunch of apps I loaded and then seldom ever used.
I don't think auto update should hurt your battery too much. Shutting down open unused web pages is another way to save battery power.
