This is true for the most part but in most of Texas we are very blessed to have a family owned grocery chain that has top notch quality and prices as good as Walmart. Walmart hate HEB because of this. HEB is able to do this because they build loyal relationships with suppliers, they buy direct from many farmers, they have vertically integrated a ton. They own their own bread plants, tortilla factories, meat plants, ice cream factory, chip factory, own shares in a soda bottler, have their own distribution network, own tons of real estate, have their own in house developed lines of products no one else has. We moved to Lubbock Texas for work and HEB doesn’t serve that area and we had to add $100 to our monthly food budget for that reason alone. I’ve been to a Kroger or Walmart for groceries twice in the last 3 years. It’s that good of a store I am loyal to a fault. But even with all that praise the chicken breasts still suck. Lol. If you’re ever in Texas stop and take a gander in an HEB and be amazed. As an HEB executive once told us in a meeting “we tried a few stores in Louisiana a few years ago, we learned HEB is Texas and Texans are HEB. We will never expand out of Texas again” another person who was high up in frito lay said they hated HEB because in his words “they were our biggest customer and biggest competitor. They make their own chips using Texas corn and Texas potatoes and their quality is as good or better than ours”. 90% of what we buy is HEB brand. Im going to try brining the breast’s next time and see how they turn out.

Supermarkets are caught in the same trap as farmers... its a race to the bottom where the low cost provider survives and everyone else goes by the way side. What's low cost provider mean? I means they buy the cheapest product they can get and try to sell it for as much as they can get.. .the result.. tough pork loins and leathery chicken breasts. If you want quality you have to go to the local butcher or at the very least the meat counter in the store.
